Right between Bellaire and Alief, there is a nice little neighborhood called Chinatown. The well-known name is a great descriptor of the neighborhood, the home to many ethnicities, mainly Vietnamese. Funny fact, there are actually two Chinatowns Houston - the new Chinatown and the old Chinatown (which is part of the East Downtown district).
The new Houston Chinatown is located in southwestern Houston. The community started expanding in the 1980s, and its distance from old Chinatown made the new residents of the community develop the new Chinatown. Aside from new immigrants, the residents also came from old Chinatown, trying to find lower cost housing and decreased crime rates (compared to old Chinatown, at that time).
The two Chinatowns are also very different in character - the old Chinatown is a classic Chinatown with buildings and storefronts, while the new Chinatown in Bellaire is a residential area, with many single family houses. The new Houston Chinatown is spread out over several miles, rather than the usual condensed Chinatowns around the USA and the rest of the world.
There are many restaurants in the new Chinatown, serving food from all of Asia, including Chinese, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Hong Kong, Filipinos, Japanese, Korean and many more ethnic cuisines. In addition, there are many "fusion kitchens", taking a modern perspective on traditional Asian food.
